Interesting facts. The 2.4 million stone blocks used for the construction of the Great Pyramid at Giza weigh an average of 2.5 tons each. Built around 2560 BC, this pyramid was (at 481 feet) the tallest man-made structure in the world for almost 4000 years until Lincoln Cathedral was finished in 1311 AD. It contains “more masonry than all the medieval cathedrals, churches and chapels built in Europe added together” (Wilson, 1996, p. 6).

I’ve been to Lincoln Cathedral, still impressive as it sits on top of the hill ( escarpment to be precise ) but not the pyramids.

Thanks, Janet. I’ve been to a number of great cathedrals, from Westminster Abbey down through Germany, France, and Spain, but never to Lincoln 😦 . The most impressive for sheer verticality for me was Cologne/Köln. The view is not enhanced by a hill as in Lincoln but is today enhanced by the suddenness with which it appears when you exit the Köln train station.

Most of the people that started building the great cathedrals probably did not live to see them completed, let alone imagine how long they would be standing!
